Creative Ideas and Witty Inventions

June 2019

We were created to be creative.

Over the past three to five years, one of my heart’s desires, besides finishing my novel, has been to see people activated in their gift or calling.

When a group of people are asked, “How many of you know what your gift is?” amazingly, only 10% to 20% raise their hands.

For instance, maybe you’re the inventor type. Sometime in your life you may have had an idea but you thought, “That was too simple.” So, the idea was dismissed. Later it was seen advertised and here comes the smack on the forehead, “Why didn’t I do that?” It’s amazing how many times the Lord has spoken to our heart, but His voice was not recognized.

Witty Inventions:

  • Putting an eraser on the end of a pencil. (Originally, they were two separate items.)
  • Taking a 4’ pole, add a motor on one end and plastic string on the other creating what is now known as the … weed wacker.

Thomas Edison’s teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

Maybe you had a desire to write, paint, dance, sing, write music, or play an instrument. Perhaps you’ve felt a call to the mission’s field or to teach or preach God’s word. You might even have felt at some point that a career change was needed. YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO ANSWER GOD’S CALL!

The scariest part is taking the first step into the unknown. After the first step, many are hit with, “What if I fail?” “What if I disappoint my family, or my friends?” The enemy of our soul does not want us to succeed. He bombards our thoughts hoping to stop us or at least deter us. DO NOT STOP!

“A thief has only one thing in mind—he wants to steal, slaughter, and destroy. But I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect—life in its fullness until you overflow!” (John 10:10 Passion).

The ability to research something is only a keystroke away.

“Study to show yourself approved …” (2 Timothy 2:15).

In general, people have a tendency to make things more complicated than they really are. So, how can we find out?

Below are steps I have shared with others.

  • Grab paper and a pen
  • Sit at a table, or someplace comfortable.
  • List all the desires of your heart. And I do mean “all.”
  • After you are finished, take it, lift it up, and pray this simple prayer, “Lord, what is Your desire for my life?”

“I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take    care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for,” (Jer 29:11 Message).

“So, my very dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the      crown of all his creatures,” (James 1:17 Message).

After praying, some people instantly knew what their gift was. For others, it took reviewing the list a few times before one specific thing captured their attention … their heart’s desire.

The typical American schedule is: Get up and get ready for work. If we have kids, that takes additional time. We go to work then come home. Cook and eat dinner. By the time dinner is over, we are too tired to do anything else, so we become a couch potato or indulge ourselves with social media. Then it’s time for bed. The American cycle.

Years ago, my husband asked me, “Do you really hear from God?”
My reply was, “Yes, when I stop long enough to listen.”

The decision to include God in our life needs to be sooner rather than later. He is not waiting to whack us upside the head. He is loving, kind, and patient. He has been waiting all our life to be with us and He wants to bless you by revealing to you what your gift is.

“Come near to God and He will come near to you,” (James 4:8a NIV).

Just give Him 10-15 minutes a day, along with a sincere heart. It’s amazing what can happen in that short amount of time.

I’m living proof, and I am not the only one who hears His voice.

“My own sheep will hear My voice and I know each one, and they will follow Me,” (John 10:27 TPT).
